NewSkin OITB partner Bram Cloet (Sirris) participated in WinterWind 2023, at the end of March in Åre, Sweden, where he won the Winterwind Innovation Award for work on experiments using a heatable coating! This innovation could find applications on wind turbine blades to fight icing conditions or for offshore foundations to counter splash icing.

Bram joined scientists, engineers, manufacturers, developers, consultants, investors, wind farm owners, O&M providers and government agency representatives from across the world in Sweden for WinterWind 2023 to discuss the challenges of generating wind power in cold climates. During the conference he presented his work on 'An active/passive coating stack for surface icing mitigation tested under various climatic conditions’ which was supported by VLAIO through the COOCK Fighting Icing project and used the EU NewSkin OITB-supported extensive ice spray test infrastructure.

The WinterWind Annual Meeting in Sweden, focuses on the challenges of generating wind power in cold climates, and covers topics like ice detection, ice prevention using coatings or heating systems, wind turbine performance and operation in cold climates.

The SIRRIS team have built up a wealth of experience from previous projects (including COOCK Fighting icing and climate chamber testing) regarding product and prototype testing in cold and icy environments. Within the NewSkin project Sirris has extended their abilities with an icing array which makes it possible to test anti-ice behaviour of different coating solutions on a large scale. This facility makes it possible to assess the properties of different anti ice coatings in a short time. It is even possible to test heatable coatings

Through the NewSkin OITB facilities and services, anti-ice behaviour of different coatings can be furthered enhanced in collaboration with other NewSkin partners, like Funditec and DCU or ML engraving for laser texturing of different characteristics.

Thus, the EU-funded NewSkin Open Innovation Test Bed project is offering unique pilot scale prototyping, upscaling, and testing facilities as well as route to market services, and access to investors, to SMEs, Research labs and industry to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative nano-surface and membrane materials and technology across Europe.
You can apply for free access to this and other NewSkin Open Innovation Test Bed facilities through NewSkin OITB Open Call 4, the final NewSkin OITB Open Call which closes on 23 June 2023, more details on the services available on platform.NewSkin-OITB.eu

To apply, please contact the team today on info@NewSkin-OITB.eu to make an initial enquiry, and/or to discuss the services for your potential application. You can sign up here to the NewSkin platform and be guided by the team in how to complete the very short online application form. Applicants can request an NDA before filling the open call application - please email info@NewSkin-OITB.eu to arrange this.

The NewSkin services offered are expected to speed-up the launch of novel nanomaterials and membranes, and commercial or personal products using these advanced materials, to boost efficiency and to support industry, especially SMEs, in better and faster development of their products.
