Use case

Test and evaluation of tribological performance of coatings to increase the resistance of spur gears

STS is an Italian company which provides customised PVD and PaCVD coatings for components, and moulds, as well as decorative coatings for use in multiple sectors. STS produces dedicated high performance durable functional coatings for Technical (automotive, moulding, components, tools) and Decorative (automotive, fashion, design) applications. With 30 years of experience, STS can customise coatings and build deposition plants by itself.

STS joined NewSkin OITB 's second open call with a project entitled “Test and evaluation of tribological performance of coatings to increase the resistance of spur gears”. The aim is to find a solution for reducing friction in gear transmissions.

The advent of electric motors with increasingly high rpm forces us to deal with micro-pitting (surface fatigue occurrences resulting in microscopic pits forming on contact surfaces). Current solutions simply involve the reduction of the surface finish or thermodiffusion of Cabonium into the steel surface (low pressure carburising).

Through NewSkin OITB, STS had the opportunity to work in collaboration with the University of Hannover (LUH ) Institute of Dynamics and Vibration Research (IDS) to produce various PVD solutions and access bench testing for an electric driving motor, thus paving the way for the improvement of motion transfer for gears.
