NewSkin nano-surface upscaling: Study on novel, uniform texturing with industry setup for upscaling innovative surface functionalisation (anti-reflective, wide spectrum antimicrobial)
Published on 11 Apr 11:24 (over 2 years ago) by AquaTTNewSkin partner ALPhANov have published results on their latest NewSkin OITB project work in Applied Surface Science. The ALPhANov team reports on an experimental study on the use of two key laser technologies for texturing surfaces (Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) and Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS)) to give rise to a novel, uniform surface texturing. The team have used an industrial set-up which will make the extension of the process over a large area possible and they discuss how their results represent a potentially significant step forward, opening the possibility for innovative surface functionalisation (anti-reflective, wide spectrum antimicrobial activity) that can be easily upscaled and exported to an industrial environment.
The EU-funded NewSkin Open Innovation Test Bed project is offering unique pilot scale prototyping, upscaling, and testing facilities as well as route to market services, and access to investors, to SMEs, Research labs and industry to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative nano-surface and membrane materials and technology across Europe.
As part of the NewSkin upscaling facilities, the team is aiming to enable surface structuring at the nanoscale with high process robustness, high throughput, and large area processing. Full details can be found in the ALPhANov paper:

The NewSkin Open Innovation Test Bed will soon open its second call for free access to nano-surface and membrane up-scaling and test facilities.
The NewSkin services offered are expected to speed-up the launch of novel nanomaterials and membranes, and commercial or personal products using these advanced materials, to boost efficiency and to support industry, especially SMEs, in better and faster development of their products.
